RACIAL JUSTICE TEAM

Our Racial Justice Team is committed to the work of equipping all of our members to recognize and understand the complexity and implications of racism and racial issues. We seek to understand race, power and privilege, shining a light on the role, both supporting and harming, that the Christian church has played in the past and seeking to challenge our congregation to support and promote racial justice.

We educate in a variety of ways: through book studies, film, speakers and by participating in community events hosted and invited by the local BIPOC community.

We provide opportunities to advocate on behalf of oppressed people in this world and work to come alongside our BIPOC neighbors so that we may grow in faith and love and be supportive and helpful allies.

Educating:

Some books that have made a difference:

James Cone The Cross and the Lynching Tree

Robin DiAngelo White Fragility

Last year Robert P. Jones was the speaker and we led a discussion on his book:

The Hidden Roots of White Supremacy and the Path to a Shared American Future

This year the speaker is Jemar Tisby and we will be reading and leading discussions on his book:

The Spirit of Justice

Being an ally:

In 2024 we hosted a Humanitarian Aid fundraiser for Gaza joining with the Islamic Center of the Twin Ports, the anti-Zionist Jewish community, and a few other Christian churches and nonreligious to raise awareness and $60,000. Praise be to God.

Check out our Sankofa publication as we gather stories and voices of our African-American and Indigenous relatives to teach the white community the stories of this land and place that they perhaps, do not know. We invite you to use this publication to take your own Sankofa sacred walk.

We invite you to join our team and/or participate in our offerings as we seek to grow in Jesus’ calling to love our neighbor.
