My ideal Duluth experience is one where people gather together, folk music is played, and important conversations are had. Even on those dark and frigid Minnesota nights, one can still seek out community once they manage to leave the house. This past March, in person community experiences came to an abrupt halt like never before.
On a recent Saturday, I found myself at the Farmers Market. A typical outing in usual times, but an extra exciting adventure in these pandemic times! As I walked back into the parking lot, I heard a sound that I had not heard since March….Music! In person! There in the parking lot, was a circle of about 10 people and their instruments, all safely distanced of course. The person who was singing was stationed 8 feet off to the side with a mic.
I think the reason both faith communities and the mental health field talk so much about relationships is because we need other people to really thrive. However, there is a “time for everything.” So while it has been necessary to avoid others to keep the community safe, our bodies and minds are trained to be with people.
As I balanced my vegetables, I recognized a feeling of joy returning to my body that I had not felt in several weeks. I let myself cry, smile, and for ten minutes, let the farmers market parking lot become sacred ground.
“If you suddenly and unexpectedly feel joy, don’t hesitate. Give in to it.” -Mary Oliver
Holy Spirit we give thanks for finding sacred moments among the mundane. Help us to find joy in the most unexpected places. Amen.
